Sheet # 1/Mother's Day

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work

1)  Susan wants to make an art project for her Mom for Mother's Day.  The project requires several supplies.  She will need a flower pot, 2 tubes of art paint, one can of white spray paint, one small bag of soil, and one flower.  She has $10.00 to spend.  The total cost of the project is $7.89.  How much change will she get back?

2)  Susan wants to buy the flower pot and the spray paint. The flower pot costs $2.00.    The spray paint costs $3.50 for one can.  Can she buy her items for under $5.00?    What is her exact cost?

3)  Susan realizes that she will only need about one fourth of her bag of soil. Her classmates also need one fourth of a bag of soil.  If she shares it with her classmates, how many will she share with?

4)  In Problem # 3, if the potting soil costs $3.68 a bag, how much would each student need to contribute to pay for their share of the soil?

5)  Susan can only buy flowers in packets of 6.  She only needs one plant.  If the packets cost $2.99 each, how much does one plant cost?   If she sells the other 5 plants to her classmates at 50 cents each, how much money will she get from the sale?

6)  Susan makes her project on May 5.  Mother's Day is May 14.  How many days will she have to keep the project hidden before she can give it to her mom?     If May 14 is on Sunday, what day of the week is May 5?

7) Susan paints her flower pot at 10:00 a.m.  It takes 3 and one half hours for the paint to fully dry.  When will it be safe for her to continue to work on her flower pot without getting wet paint on herself?

8)  Susan's teacher tells her she must water the plant with one half cup of water every other day.  If she waters it on May 5, how many times will she have to water it again before she gives it to her mom on Mother's Day?

9)  Susan's teacher brings a roll of ribbon for the students to make bows to go around their flower pot gifts.  The students figured that the flower pots measured 6 inches around.  It would take an additional 12 inches to make a pretty bow.  How much ribbon will Susan need for her flower pot?  If there are 24 students in the class, how much ribbon will it take for all of them to decorate their gift?

10)   If the roll of ribbon is 500 inches long, will one roll be enough for all of the students to decorate their gift?
