Sheet # 6/Earth Day

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work

1) On Earth Day we let our butterflies out of their box. If there are 10 third grade classes and each class let go 6 butterflies, how many butterflies would be set free in all?

2) Before your bedtime, your mother told you to take a bath, but to only run the water for 8 minutes. If you started the bath water at 7:33 p.m., at what time will you have to turn the water off?

3) The cooks in our school cafeteria wanted to save energy. They planned on making sack lunches for lunch on the Friday before Earth Day. If they made 350 sack lunches, and each class had 20 students, how many classes would be fed in all that day?

4) Every time someone opens the refrigerator door at home, it costs 3 cents. If I open the door 5 times today, Shelby opens it 10 times today, and Tracy opens it 7 times today, how much is the total cost for the door to be opened today?

5) If you take baths in the bath tub you probably use at least 15 gallons of hot water each time. That costs about 10 cents for bath. How much money are you spending on baths if you take one each night for two weeks?

6) Electric blankets cost 8 cents a night or $2.40 a month per person to operate. Use warm pajamas and blankets to save the most energy. If you and your brother each use an electric blanket every night for 90 days, how much money did you spend for the use of the electric blankets?

7) To save energy at night, you can turn off the air conditioner, open the windows and turn on fans to get cool outdoor air into the house. If you open your windows at 8:00 p.m. and close them before leaving for school at 7:20 a.m., how long did your windows stay open?

8) If you sleep on a waterbed, set the temperature below 85 degrees and keep the mattress covered at all times to save money. If you don't, you will pay an extra $20.00 a month for electricity. How much would you pay per month if you paid this $20.00 a month for 1 year?

9) Very high ceilings waste energy. The average ceiling should be 8 feet high, but the ceilings in my house are 11 feet high. If I have 9 rooms in my house, how many total feet are all the ceilings in my house?

10) Schools use a tremendous amount of electricity each year. If our school's monthly electrical bill was $2,059.00 in March and in April the electrical bill was $2,995.00, how much more did we spend in April than in March?
