Sheet # 11/Halloween - Bat's Food

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work.

1) The bats' food, the saguaro cacti, are just beginning to bloom. The average saguaro produces 295 flowers per plant per growing season. A bat needs 20,200 calories per day and there are 960 calories in each flower. How many saguaro flowers does a bat have to visit to sustain it for one day? How many flowers will be required by 10,000 bats to sustain for one day?

2) If a bat gets 96 calories in each trip to a flower, how many trips will it make to flowers to collect 20,200 calories?

3) In Problem 2, if each trip takes 30 seconds, how many minutes does a bat have to forage to get the nectar it needs each day?

Answers for sheet # 11

1) 20,200 divided by 960 will give you 21 flowers

21 flowers x 10,000 = 210,000 flowers

2) 210 trips

3) 210 trips x 30 seconds = 105 minutes = 1 hour 45 minutes
