Sheet # 227/St. Patrick's Day

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Show your work.

1) St. Patrick's Day custom came to America in the year 1737. How many years from today have we been celebrating this holiday?

2) The St. Patrick's Day parade was supposed to begin downtown at 9:00 a.m., but they didn't get started until 10:06 because of so much traffic causing a jam. How late were they starting the parade?

3) If I add one 3-leaf shamrock to my collection of twelve 3-leaf shamrocks in my bag, how many shamrock leaves would I have altogether?

4) While resting after several 3 mile walks, I spied a 4-leaf clover. I picked it Monday at 8:15 a.m. then saved to give it to my friend at 5:00 p.m. that night for good luck. She then gave it to her brother at 10:00 p.m. that night to help him have good luck sleeping throughout the night. How much time had passed from the time I found the clover to the time I gave it to my friend?

5) A Leprechaun is believed to be about 2 feet tall. If you are 5 feet tall, then how much taller are you than the Leprechaun in inches?

6) If each of four Leprechauns knocked on your door to give you two 4-leaf clovers, how many total clovers would you receive?

7) It is said that at the end of the rainbow is a pot-o-gold. If you found this pot and counted the money, you would find $15,000 in coins. If you share this money with your 3 friends and yourself, how much money will each person get?

8) The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish Village of Blarney. It was built in 1446 and its walls are 18 feet thick. How many inches thick is the wall?

9) It is said that people who want to kiss the stone have to lie on their back and bend backward and downward, holding iron bars to support you. If you hold on to the iron bars for 48 seconds one day, 45 seconds the next day, and finally the last day for 30 seconds, how many total minutes did you have to hold onto the bars?

10) Can you imagine kissing something that has had people's lips all over it for 500 years? Yuck! If 22 people kiss this stone each day, how many people will have kissed it in one week?

11) There is a tradition in school that if you don't wear green on March 17th you will get pinched. If you get pinched first thing at 8:00 a.m. and then you're lucky to not get pinched until 180 minutes from that time, what time will it be then?

12) At the St. Patrick's Day party each of 24 students got a 12-ounce cup of green Kool-Aid. How many total cups is that?

13) If 15 out of 24 children in my classroom wore green on March 17th, what fraction of children would not be wearing green that day?

14) If 15/24 of the children in my classroom wore green like they were supposed to, reduce the fraction to its lowest denominator?

15) Ramsha plans to bring 24 green cupcakes to school on St. Patrick's Day, but she fell and dropped 1/4 of them. How many cupcakes did she drop in all?

16) While following the rainbow to its pot-o-gold, I traveled 3 miles before having to have to stop and rest. I figured if I would travel 3 miles each time before stopping to rest and the pot-o-gold is 36 miles away from the beginning, how many breaks will I take in all?

17) If you find a four-leaf clover it means that you double the good luck you usually have. If I have good luck 25 percent of the time, what would be the percentage of good luck when it doubled?

18) If I have good luck 75 percent of the 365 days in a year, then how many days am I not having good luck?
