Jose bought some cookies for the year-end party. The price of chocolate chip cookies is 5 for $1.00. The price of oatmeal cookies is 8 for 1.00. Jose paid exactly $2.35 to buy 14 cookies. How many of each kind did he buy?

Answer for sheet # 79

Number of chocolate cookies + number of oatmeal cookies = 14

Find the price of one chocolate cookie and one oatmeal cookie.

One chocolate cookie = 20 cents
One oatmeal cookie = 12 cents

20 cents times number of chocolate cookies + 12 cents x number of oatmeal cookies = $2.35

Using these two equations, number of chocolate cookies = 8. Number of oatmeal cookies = 6
