Sheet # 42/Mental Math/A Day in the Life of Madeline Ematics

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Maddy woke up early, at 5:30 a.m. After taking shower and getting dressed, she looked at the clock. “5:50 a.m.!” she exclaimed, “I have (a)_______hours and _______minutes to get ready for the 12:15 p.m. lunch party!” She rushed out the door, skipping breakfast. In her car, she looked at the map.

“Let’s see” she mumbled “the party is in Addville, which is 120 miles away. If I can average 60 mph, I should get there in (b) _______ hours.”

And she got on the road.

About an hour later, she got hungry. “I never should have skipped breakfast!” sighed Maddy. She spotted a donut shop and pulled over. “Well, donuts are $6 a dozen, but I just want one. It should cost (c) _________. I should get a coffee also. It costs $0.45, so my total is (d) _________.” Maddy handed a dollar bill to the clerk and received (e)_________ in change.

Finally she arrived in Addville and drove right to the grocery store for party supplies. She needed 3 dozen rolls, 5 pounds of meat and 4 pounds of cheese. Rolls are $1.25 a dozen so 3 dozen costs (f) ________; meat is $2.50 a pound, so 5 pounds cost (g) ___________, and cheese is $ 2.00 a pound, so 4 pounds cost (h) __________. The total is (i) _____________. She handed the clerk two $20 bills and received (j) ____________ in change.

Next she drove to the hardware store for decorations. “This is a construction theme party, so lumber would be fun.” She decided to get a 12 1/4 foot board, but they only sold 16 foot boards. “Oh well,” Maddy thought , “I will have to cut (k) ________ off.” She decided to get some dowels. She wanted a 0.5 meter dowel, but the lengths were in centimeters. “I will take the (l) _______cm dowel please,” she told the salesman. Last she wanted a sheet of plywood 8 feet long, but it was measured by inches. In her head she multiplied 8 by 12 and got (m) _________. She was ready for the party.

The party was a success. Her next stop that day was Subtractia where she was making dinner for the mayor. “It’s 1:45 p.m. now, and I need to be there by 6:30 p.m., so I have (n) ________hours and ________minutes to get there. Since the speed limit on the freeway here is 50 mph and it is 150 miles away, it should take (o) __________ hours.” And she was off. When she arrived she went right for the grocery store. Maddy needed two pounds of cheese, but she did not know which brand to buy.

“Cheezy-pack is $4.49 for 5 pounds, but Mootown Cheese is $9.49 for 10 pounds. Which is the better buy?” she wondered. She decided (p) ________________ was better. Next she went to get the drinks. “Blue juice is $1.75 for 250 mL, and Green Juice is $5 for 750 mL, so (q) ______________ is the better deal.” She paid for the items and started cooking.

“This recipe is meant for two servings, but I am serving eight. I have to multiply everything by 4,” Maddy figured. “Okay, it calls for 1 1/4 cups of cheese, so I need (r)__________ cups, 3/4 cup of water, so I need (s) ___________ cups. 1/2 a cup of butter- I had better make it (t) ___________. Last, 1 tsp of sugar. That should be (u)_________tsps for eight servings.” The conversion was perfect, and the casserole was delicious. Maddy was tired. It was 9:30 p.m., and home was far away. She had a friend in MultipliCity, so she called and asked if she could stay there. Her friend said “you can stay here if you get here by 11:00 p.m. Since it is 9:30 p.m. now that gives you (v) ________ hours and (w)___________ minutes to get here. Can you make it here by then?” Maddy promised to be there and smiled as she realized she would soon be asleep.
