Sheet # 229

Name: ________________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work.

1)
Brittany and Dahlia went shopping. Dahlia had $98.25 and Brittany had $61.72. They each bought a shirt for $12.50 and pants for $40.95. Brittany then sees some shoes she really wants for $42.50. Dahlia wants to loan Brittany the money, but isn't sure she has enough. Does Dahlia have enough money left to loan Brittany the money for the shoes? If so, how much money will be left after the shoes are purchased?

2) Kim was learning about integers and came upon the following problem in her homework. It was: -7 + 9 + -10 + - 1 + 2 –3 + -10 + 100 + -99 + -1+ -30 -10 = How should she solve it?

3) Brad was 5 feet tall and had a shadow of 4 feet tall. He was standing next to a flagpole that was 28 feet tall. How tall was the flagpole shadow?

4) Joe, Will and Johnny were on their way to a pizza parlor. They had not worked out the difficulties of how they were going to pay for it and how they were going to split the pizza. The pizza cost $12.75 including tax and there were 10 pieces of pizza. How will the boys split these things?

Answers for sheet # 229
1)
$98.25 + $51.72 = $159.97
$12.50 x 2 + $40.95 x 2 = $131.19
$159.97 - $131.19 = $28.78

Between them, the girls only have $28.78 left, so there is not enough money to buy the shoes.

2)Follow the order of operations and subtract or add from left to right. When subtracting negatives, remember to add the opposite.

-7 + 9 = 2; 2 + -10 = -8; -8 + -1 = -9; -9 + 2 = -7;
-7 + -3 = -10; -10 + -10 = -20; -20 + 100 = 80;
80 + -99 = -19; -19 + -1 = -20; -20 + -30 = -50
-50 + -10 = -60
The answer is = - 60

3) Solve using proportions: thing/shadow

5/4 = 28/x
4 x 28 = 5x
112 = 5x
112 ¸ 5 = 22.5
The flagpole shadow was 22½ feet tall.

4) $12.75/3 = $4.25 per boy
10/3 = 3 1/3 pieces of pizza for each boy
