Sheet # 217

Name: ________________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work.

1) Susie was riding at her ranch at 7:00 a.m. She rode for 3 hours, then stopped to clean tack for an hour, and then rode each of 4 horses another hour and 15 minutes apiece. What time was it when Susie was done with her day?

2) In the morning, the Candy Store has 3 times as much candy as the 11 children standing in it have. Each child has 9 pieces of candy at that time. In the afternoon, the store is robbed and loses 113 pieces of candy. That evening, the store gets a shipment of 61 additional pieces of candy. How much candy does the store have in the morning and how much candy is left in the evening?

3) Marcy wants to make pecan puffs for a bake sale. Her Grandmother has a special recipe for them that is very precise and feeds 4 people. Marcy wants to find out if her 4 cup sauce pan is big enough to make the recipe. The recipe has the following ingredients: ¾ cup of butter, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, 5/6 cup crushed pecans and 1 3/8 cup flour. Is Marcy's pan big enough to hold the recipe? (3 tablespoons = ¼ cup)

4) Billy Bob brought his remote control airplane to the Grand Canyon. When it took off, it rose 59 feet off the ground over the canyon. Then it climbed an additional 22 feet before dropping 101 feet. Then it rose another 100 feet. Was the airplane above or below ground level at that point (ground level = 0)?

Answers for sheet # 217

1) 7:00 + 3 hours = 10:00
10:00 + 1 hour for tack cleaning = 11:00
1:15 x 4 = 5 hours on the 4 horses
11:00 + 5 hours = 4:00 p.m. when she was done

2) (11 x 9 x 3) = 297 pieces in the morning
297 – 113 + 61 =
184 + 61 = 245 pieces at the end of the day

3) Convert the fractions so they have a common denominator. ¾ = 18/24; 3 tablespoons = ¼ cup = 6/24; 5/6 = 20/24; 1 3/8 = 11/8 = 33/24. Add the fractions and you get 77/24 or 3 5/24. So yes, Marcy's saucepan will hold the entire recipe.

4) 59 + 22 – 101 + 100 = 80 feet above ground level.
