Sheet # 216

Name: ________________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work.

1) The Moraga basketball team was shooting a technical foul. The coach has asked you to choose the best player to make the shot using these statistics: Amanda makes 25 out of 36 shots; Sarah makes 18 out of 30 shots, and Donna makes 11 out of 18 shots. Who should go to the line to take the shot?

2) Sonia and Sasha have the same birthday. Sonia received $105 and Sasha received $115. Sonia also received $10 allowance on top of her birthday money. Sasha remembered that she owed Sarah $3.75, and both girls were going on a field trip that cost each of them $15. Who ended up with the most money?

3) Siblings Todd and Emily are their annual medical checkups. The nurse records their weight and height. She says that Emily is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 122 lbs. Todd weighs 2 times as much as Emily. How much does Todd weigh?

4) Molly, Sandy and Kelley each ran the 50 yard dash. Molly ran it in 10.4 seconds, Sandy ran it in 11.9 seconds, and Kelley ran it in 9.8 seconds. What was the average speed of the girls?

5) A United Shuttle from Los Angeles arrives at SFO every 20 minutes. A United Shuttle from San Diego arrives at SFO every 45 minutes. The America West Shuttle arrives from Las Vegas every 30 minutes. The planes are at the airport at 1:00 p.m. When is the next time all three shuttles will arrive at SFO at the same time again?

Answers for sheet # 216

1) 25/36 = .694 for Amanda
18/30 = .6 for Sarah
11/18 = .61 for Donna

Amanda should take the shot because her average is highest

2) Sonia: $105 + $10 - $15 = $100
Sasha: $115 - $3.75 - $15 = $96.25

$100 > $96.25; Sonia had more money than Sasha.

3) Todd weighs 244 lbs.

4) (10.4 + 11.9 + 9.8) ¸ 3 = 10.7 seconds is their average speed

5) Find the LCM of 20, 45 and 30. It is 2² x 3² x 5, which is 180. 180 minutes equals 3 hours; 1 p.m. + 3 hours = 4 p.m. 4 p.m. is when the planes will be at the airport again.
