Sheet # 213

Name: ________________________ Date_____________

Explain and Show Your Work.

1) Train A stops at the Orinda station every 20 minutes. Train B stops at the Orinda station every 35 minutes. On Monday morning, both trains left at 8:00 a.m. for their first route. How many hours will it be until they both stop at the Orinda station at the same time again?

2) Lauren is 19 years older than Sheila. Lauren is 43. Eric is 15 years younger than Sheila and Mark is 4 years younger than Eric. How old are Sheila, Eric, and Mark?

3) Mike, Jerry, and Phil are snowboarding down the Lumberjack run. Mike made 18 runs and fell 8 times. Jerry made 22 runs and fell 14 times. Phil made 24 runs and fell 16 times. How would you describe how often each boy fell as a fraction in simplest form? Second, which boy was the best snowboarder based on the percent of the time he fell down?

4) There were 2 roller coasters at the theme park. They went the same distance on two different tracks. One coaster was for faster people and it went around that track in 12 seconds. The other coaster was for cautious people and it went around the track in 18 seconds. If your turn lasted until the two coasters were side by side again, how long will you stay on the coaster?

5) Victor's horse runs 23 2/3 miles in 40 minutes and Carl's horse runs 35 ½ miles in one hour. How far will each horse run in 2 hours?

Answers for sheet # 213

1) Find the LCM of 20 and 35, which is 4 x 5 x 7 which is 140 minutes, or 2 hours and 20 minutes. It will be 10:20 a.m. when the trains meet at the station again.

2) Sheila = s
S + 19 = 43 or 43 – 19 = S; Sheila is 24
Eric = e
E + 15 = 24 (Sheila's age)
E = 24 – 15 = 9; Eric is 9
Mark = m
M + 4 = 9
9 – 4 = M; Mark is 5

3) Mike: 8 falls out of 18 runs = 4/9
Jerry: 14 falls out of 22 runs = 7/11
Phil: 16 falls out of 24 runs = 2/3

Divide each numerator by each denominator and multiply by 100 to get the percentage.

4/9 = .44444, or 44.4 %
7/11 = .63636363 or 63.6%
2/3 = .6666666 or 66.6%

Mike is the best snowboarder because he fell the least that day.

4) Find the LCM of 12 and 18 which is 2² x 3² which is 36. Your turn would last 36 seconds.

5) (23 2/3 x 120)/40 = 71 miles; (35 ½ x 120)/60 = 71 miles
