Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Explain, and show your work.

1) The Grinch's cave was 5 miles north of Whoville. The inside of the cave was shaped like a rectangle. It measured 5 ft by 12 ft. What was the perimeter of the inside of the cave?

2) The Grinch's dog Max was 8 years old. Some people say that one dog year is equal to 7 people years. How old was Max in people years?

3) The Grinch thought up his nasty idea at 5:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve. It took him 2 hours and 15 minutes to get ready. What time did he leave for Whoville?

5) It was snowing in Whoville that night. The first hour, an inch of snow fell. The second hour, two more inches fell. The third hour, three more inches fell. Keeping with that pattern, how long would it take for 15 inches of snow to fall in all?

6) The first Who chimney was 24 feet long. How many yards long was that?

7) Grandma Who had knitted each of the little Whos a Christmas stocking. They were hung neatly in a row from the mantle. The Grinch grabbed them three at a time and stuffed them in his bag. If there were 12 stockings (lots of cousins were visiting), how many grabs did the Grinch have to make?

8) The Grinch was 53 years old that year. If the story took place in 1957, when was the Grinch born?

9) East of Whoville there was a Christmas tree farm where the Whos' Christmas trees were grown. They were cut down, loaded onto a truck, and taken to Whoville where they were sold by the Boy Scouts. 9 trees fit on the truck. How many trips did the truck have to make to get 108 trees to Whoville?

10) The Boy Scouts drank hot chocolate while they were selling the trees. The first night they drank 2 quarts of hot chocolate. How many cups of hot chocolate did they drink?

11) The second night they drank 5 pints of hot chocolate. Which night did they drink more?

12) The trees were sold by height. They cost $2.00 per foot. Which would cost more - a tree that was 3 yards tall or a tree that was 72 inches tall? __________

How much more? ____________________

13) Mother Who wanted to bake a fruitcake for the Christmas feast. She went to the Whoville Produce Market where she bought 10 ounces of raisins, 12 ounces of dates, 15 ounces of pecans, and 15 ounces of walnuts. She went to another store and bought 4 ounces of candied cherries and 8 ounces of candied pineapple. How many pounds of ingredients did she buy?

14) For Christmas, Cindy-Lou Who wanted a Barbie Doll. The one she wanted cost $7.97. If Father Who gave the clerk in the toy store a 10 dollar bill, how much change would he receive?

15) The Grinch planned to dump his sled load of Who-Christmas things off the top of Mt. Crumpit. It was 3,000 feet to the top. How many inches was that?

16) The Grinch started wondering why Christmas came at 9:45 a.m. He puzzled about it for three hours. What time did he realize that he couldn't stop Christmas?
