Sheet # 6/The Witch of Willoughby Wood

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Show your work.

1. There once was a witch of Willoughby Wood. Willoughby Wood is a small town in the northern part of the state. Most of the town's people are employed by the Acme Halloween Costume Factory. The population of Willoughby Wood is 186. If half of the people work in the factory, how many people do not work there?

2) The witch's job at the factory was to provide hot coffee for the workers. She kept a cauldron going for coffee breaks. Her cauldron held three gallons. How many people could get a cup of coffee from her cauldron?

3) As you might guess, the witch's personal hygiene was not all that great. She did not comb her hair very often. If today were Halloween, and she hadn't combed her hair in 97 days, what was the date she last combed her hair?

4) The witch used lots of hand lotion in an attempt to keep her hands soft and smooth. Hand lotion can be expensive (especially if you have dry scaly skin like the witch's and use a lot) so she shopped around. She was able to get her favorite brand at K-Mart for $2.29. It went on sale for $1.98. How much could she save by buying it on sale?

5) The witch found that as she got older, her knee bothered her more and more. Her doctor suggested that she walk every day to keep it limbered up. She began walking for one hour each day. If she walked three miles in an hour, how many minutes did it take her to walk one mile?

6) She could jump (they say) to the moon and back. If she made a round trip to the moon, as legend says she did, how many miles did she jump? The distance from the earth to the moon is 238,857 miles.

7) The witch claims that last year she actually made two trips to the moon and back. She reported that on her second approach to the moon she was startled by a near collision with a cow, who was making its famous jump over the moon. The cow came within 30 yards of her. How many feet away was the cow?
