Sheet # 2/Five Little Pumpkins

Name: _____________________ Date_____________

Five little pumpkins, sitting on a gate--

1) The five pumpkins were bought at a roadside stand. One of them cost $3.00, the second one cost $2.50, the third and the fourth were $2.00 each, and the fifth was $1.00 (it was rather small). How much did the five pumpkins cost altogether?

2) The first one said, "Oh my, it's getting late." The pumpkins had gone to sit on the gate at 6:00 p.m. It is now 9:20 p.m. How long have they been sitting there?

3) The second one said, "There are ghosts in the air." The first pumpkin counted 27 ghosts swooping through the night sky. The second spotted 16 peeking through the window of a haunted house, the third pumpkin looked and looked but didn't see any. The fourth pumpkin saw 31 dancing in the graveyard, and the fifth pumpkin saw 12 hanging on the branch of an old dead tree. How many ghosts did the five little pumpkins see altogether?

4) The five little pumpkin were different sizes. The first one weighed 10 pounds, the second weighed 9 pounds, the third one weighed 8 pounds, and the fourth one weighed 7 pounds. Keeping with this pattern, how much do you think the fifth one weighed?

5) The fourth one said , "Let's run and run and run." Some of the pumpkins could run faster than the others because they contained fewer seeds. The first had 367 seeds, and the fifth little pumpkin only had 92 seeds. (Even though the first little pumpkin was larger, the fifth pumpkin was faster.)

a) If we combine the seeds of pumpkin #1 and pumpkin #5, how many seeds do we have?

b) If we compare the number of seeds of #1 and #5, what is the difference?

6) The fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun!!" Pumpkin #5 had a circumference (distance around) of 217 centimeters. Pumpkin #3 had a circumference of 490 centimeters.

a) Which one was fatter?_________________

b) What was the difference?_________________________

7) "OOOOoooooooohhhhhhh," went the wind, and OUT went the lights, and the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight!! The pumpkins rolled down a hill until they were found by some kids who were out trick-or-treating. Pumpkin #1 rolled 48 feet, #2 rolled 119 feet, #3 rolled 82 feet, #4 rolled 137 feet, and #5 rolled 10 yards.

Which one rolled the farthest? (Hint: How many feet are there in a yard?)
